Morningside (DBN) Verblyf
Morningside is a suburb located in the port city of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. It is 2 kilometres inland from the Indian Ocean and just a few years ago was a dilapidated area characterised by neglected buildings and dropping property prices. However, after a big push towards gentrification, the suburb has bounced back and is now rather nice.
Morningside is a residential suburb characterised by lovely old architecture, and like the rest of Durban, friendly inhabitants. The streets are lined with Edwardian and Victorian style houses, complete with tin roofs and wide verandas. The suburb is also scattered with parks and gardens.
One of the most notable parks is the Jameson Park and Rose Garden. The plot of land it occupies was once a large pineapple plantation (more what you’d expect from Durban’s subtropical climate), though you’d never be able to tell looking at it now. The Jameson Park answers once and for all the question of how roses cope in a subtropical environment, and given that there are 200 species of roses, represented in 600 bushes, the answer seems to be ‘very well’. This is a good location for aspiring photographers to come and try out their skills and also makes a lovely spot for a picnic lunch.
Morningside also lays claim to Durban’s pumping Florida Road (a claim it admittedly shares with the neighbouring suburb of Windermere). Florida Road is Durban’s answer to everything hip. It is a fashionable strip consisting of boutiques, galleries, restaurants, bars and clubs. If you want a taste of city life in the otherwise docile Durban, head to Florida Road!
Morningside lies on the south bank of the Umgeni River and is a relaxed, convenient spot to spend a few days if you’re visiting Durban.
