Glenwood Verblyf

Glenwood is an affluent suburb on Durban’s famous Berea. The Berea is a raised ridge to the north of Durban which looks over Durban’s city centre and out towards the Indian Ocean. It refers to a group of suburbs of which Musgrave and Glenwood are the two main ones. These two prominent suburbs are divided by the N3 freeway. Once upon a time the Berea was home to some of the most expensive real estate in KwaZulu Natal, a status it has since given up to Umhlanga and Durban North.

The Berea was, and still is, home to some of Durban’s oldest, most impressive and beautiful mansions which were built on the then-forested ridge, today though many have been converted to offices.

Glenwood, given its position on the ridge, also has great views of Durban, as well as some interesting places to visit. The Howard College campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal is located in Glenwood, and the Durban Botanical Garden is located nearby on the Berea. The garden, which lies on 15 hectares of prime Berea land, is one of Durban’s oldest institutions and also lays claim to the title of the oldest surviving botanical garden in Africa.

From Glenwood, and the Berea in general, it’s easy to get to other interesting parts of Durban. The city centre for example, with its heady mix of spice stalls and women adorned in traditional saris is accessed within a few minutes’ drive, while the beaches of the Golden Mile, and places like the Suncoast Casino are equally accessible.

Glenwood is a nice place to base yourself in Durban if you’re after a relaxed base with good views and easy access to some of Durban’s most popular attractions.
