Point Waterfront Verblyf

Durban is a port city in the South African province of KwaZulu Natal. The harbour, which is amongst the busiest in Southern Africa, is on the city’s east coast and is naturally protected by the famous Durban Bluff on its south side, and the point on its north side.

For many years, the point was not much more than a landmass jutting into the ocean performing its primary job of protecting the boats in the harbour. However, recently, a new development on the point is turning the point’s reputation around. This development is known as the Point Waterfront.

The Point Waterfront is currently home to a sprinkling of offices, apartments and shops, as well as a major Durban attraction, the Ushaka Marine World, all of which looks out over the entrance to the port, the harbour itself and the great Indian Ocean beyond. The Point Waterfront, and Ushaka Marine World in particular make up the southern end of the popular promenade which follows Durban’s Golden Mile clinging to the coast as far as the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Point Waterfront was initially developed in 2003 and is gradually adding more arrows to its sheaf. The plan is for a diverse complex of hotels, offices, apartment blocks and retail outlets in an ultra-modern pocket of Durban. Already the buildings there are sleek and angular with clean lines and glass façades. To add a little something extra, there is a small network of canals meandering among the buildings. An extra novelty touch is the presence of gondolas which pick their way along the waterways.

Surprisingly, it is all rather reminiscent of Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred docks or even the London docks. In short, an entirely unexpected experience in Durban, which is generally more of a homely, relaxed city, than a chic modern one. All the more reason to visit though!
