Elysium Verblyf
While many avid movie watchers would associate the name ‘Elysium’ with the sci-fi flick, the town offers holidaymakers an alternate experience. A visit here won’t be action-packed, but it is a tranquil haven characterised by sun-kissed beach days.
Elysium is a small village found on the Umdoni Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Elysium is relatively unknown, which works in its favour as the beaches are virtually untouched. Holidaymakers will be awed by the myriad of marine life found on the bottoms of rock pools and in deeper waters. The marine life creates for pleasurable diving experiences, where snorkelers and scuba divers will be privy to the sights of a colourful underwater world. Bathers can enjoy many hours spent jumping over and diving underneath the waves, an experience made all the more enjoyable because of the temperate current of the Indian Ocean.
In the late afternoons, Elysium is ideal for long, relaxing walks along the coastline, with its vast stretches of white sand. Beach-goers looking to take few keepsakes home with them can pick up beach shells that are washed ashore. Alternatively, enjoy a sundowner while watching as the sun sets over the ocean.
Fishing is popular among the locals, but especially so during the annual Sardine Run. Between June and July each year, countless millions of silver sardines will make their journey from the Cape to the warmer waters of the KwaZulu-Natal region. This occurrence attracts flocks of seabirds and predators, not to mention fishermen, who are looking to catch their share of the tasty fish.
While holidays in Elysium are predominantly spent on the beach – tanning, playing volleyball or swimming in the sea, visitors can take a break from the sun and sand with some time spent on the golf course. Selborne Park Golf Course, found in the nearby area, is said to be one of the most sought after estate in the country. A round here will see you playing through well-manicured fairways and manoeuvring your way through a coastal forest. Hazards and challenges that players should watch out for include water features, raised bunkers and thickets of bush.
