Greyton Verblyf
This charming little town is a favourite among the Western Cape’s weekend holiday makers. It is situated in the Overberg region which means that not only is Greyton; set in extremely scenic surroundings, but it is within a convenient drive of Cape Town.
While Greyton lies within an easy 1.5 hours from the mother city, it feels worlds away. The town is filled with quaint cottages, shaded avenues, rose gardens and small restaurants spilling over onto the sidewalks. All this is tucked into a picturesque valley, overlooked by the looming Sonderend Mountains. It is in these same mountains where numerous adventures are to be had.
Greyton is an excellent destination for just about anyone – an assortment of mountain bike and hiking trails dot the mountain and surrounding farmlands while the character of the town itself keeps the less active entertained. The streets are dominated by pedestrian traffic, making a stroll or cycle around town a pleasant experience.These strolls can be further enhanced by a visit to one of the small art galleries, run by local artists who find inspiration in amongst the scenery. One of Greyton’s quirkier attractions is the Doll’s House, located within Searle’s Trading Post. This museum of sorts is defined by the oddly lifelike dolls positioned in their realistically built and decorated doll’s houses.
Greyton has become synonymous with the wellness industry over the years and those looking for the ultimate weekend break will have access to all manner of pampering from massage and facials to kinesiology and reiki at Greyton’s numerous wellness centres. Regular yoga and other ‘mind-soul-body’ type retreats are hosted in Greyton too.
And what would a small town, developed on the back of local agriculture be without a farmers’ market and a few delightful restaurants and coffee houses? On Saturdays the market is in operation selling the usual variety of cheeses, breads, jams and fresh breads, as well as a selection of alternatively interesting and beautiful craft products.
The restaurant scene consists of gorgeous little eateries selling wholesome, delicious food in relaxing locations about town.
