Nottingham Road Verblyf - 2
Nottingham Road is a small but ever-popular town in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands of South Africa. It lies on the N3 road between Johannesburg and Durban is a mere 40 minutes’ driving time from Pietermaritzburg and 20 minutes from the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountain range. Owing to Nottingham Road’s picturesque setting amongst undulating farmlands it has become especially popular for romantic weekends away and wedding parties.
As with many regions in South Africa, the Midlands was an attractive base for the English settlers. At the time though, the settlers had a tough time preventing the loss of their livestock to the local San population, who saw the cattle and other animals as an easy source of food. By then the hunter-gatherer group had been confined largely to the foothills and Drakensberg Mountain itself by the British and the Zulu.
Given the lack of space, it stands to reason that prey species were in shorter supply too. Once the settlers had solved this problem, the settlement became more stable and they named it Nottingham Road after their home in Nottingham in the English Midlands. Today one of the only tangible memories of this period is the Nottingham Fort which stands just outside of town.
Nottingham Road is at the heart of the Midlands Meander tourist route and is the epitome of a bucolic lifestyle. The area is notorious for dairy farming and a cheese-making industry thrives alongside it. The region is also dotted with horse-stud farms, craft cottage industry and numerous spas, hotels, and self-catering establishments.
Nottingham Road is an attractive option for weekend getaways given the array of fine-dining establishments in the area and the variety of activities on offer, which range from fly-fishing and mock fox-hunting, to sampling the products of the Nottingham Road Brewery Company and playing a round of golf on one of the scenic but challenging courses in the area - such as the Gowrie Farm Golf Course.
Notties, as it’s affectionately known by locals, is a lovely little town with an interesting history and lots to do.
