Pilanesberg Accommodatie
The Pilanesberg area refers to a geographically unique mountain range called the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ridge Complex. It consists of 3 concentric ridges which owe their existence to the massive eruption of a volcano 1 200 million years ago. This complex contains numerous minerals and the area continues to fascinate geologists. It is enclosed in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, so it attracts many holiday-makers too.
The Pilanesberg is named after a Tswana chief called Pilane, who headed up a traditional tribe in the area. It is located in the North West province of South Africa, which is still the haunt of many Tswana people and can be found outside Rustenburg, the capital city of the North West province. It is also an easy drive from Pretoria.
The 572 kilometre squared game reserve is the major attraction in the area and is home to the big 5 animals, leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino. Given its status as a transitional zone between the Kalahari and Lowveld biomes, the area has a wide variety of plant species, which in turn supports a broad diversity of animals, insects and birds. There are said to be over 350 bird species in the area, including permanent residents and migratory birds.
The park contains a number of rest camps within it, but is also open to day visitors. Facilities include bars, picnic sites and ablutions.
Another star attraction near the Pilanesberg is Sun City, the casino and entertainment complex famous for its ‘Valley of the Waves’ water park. The experience at Sun City is completely contrary to what you will get at Pilanesberg, but some people enjoy the contrast.
