Rustenburg Logement - 2
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys getting to grips with the ‘real’ South Africa, then consider Rustenburg for your next holiday escape. This small city in the North West province of South Africa may not be the trendiest one in SA, but its close proximity to some of South Africa’s best game reserves as well as the surrounding historical sites, make it a convenient escape which can keep you busy for days.
Rustenburg and its surrounds is the traditional home of the Bafokeng tribe, who have not only a fascinating tribal history, but also a couple of colourful clashes with the colonialists under their belts. Many sites in the area pay homage to this history, with various battlefield sites, old forts and historical burial sites making interesting day trips from the main city. Going even further back in history, there are numerous stone-age sites in the area, offering any aspiring archaeologists a shot at glory.
Those preferring a break based in the present, Rustenburg has not one but two of South Africa’s premier game reserves. The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is the 4th largest reserve in South Africa and unique in that it hosts the Big 5 on the floor of an extinct volcano. The other Big 5 reserve nearby is Madikwe, while the Kgaswane (Rustenburg) Game Reserve offers a wealth of bird and buck species, plenty of hiking trails for all levels and a host of 4x4 trails too. A major draw-card for the area is that it is Malaria-free something that cannot be said for South Africa’s other game-viewing areas.
Finally, Rustenburg is a mere stone’s throw away from Sun City. With a wild water park, wave machine and casino to keep you entertained, it offers an experience worlds away from Rustenburg’s historical sites and game reserves. This may just be the hook that reels you in. Where else can you have such a broad base of experiences, from marvelling at nature to gazing at a man-made wonder, all within 30 minutes of each other?
