Stanger Verblyf

Stanger is a small town in KwaZulu Natal, just north of Durban. It lies just off the N2 highway on the Dolphin Coast. The town, which is officially known as KwaDukuza has an interesting history and plays an important role in KwaZulu Natal’s cultural history.

The Stanger which one sees today is, believe it or not, its second incarnation as a human settlement. Many years ago, during the days of the great Zulu king, Shaka, it was the capital of the Zulu kingdom, home to King Shaka himself and named KwaDukuza. The Zulu name literally means ‘Land of the Lost People’, thanks to the layout of the huts, which formed a labyrinth of sorts, causing people to lose themselves in the narrow pathways between them. It also the place where King Shaka was killed by his 2 half-brothers, one of whom succeeded him as the Zulu Chief. However, soon after the change in leadership, the entire settlement was abandoned, leaving very little trace of human habitation.

In 1873, European settlers arrived and started a settlement in the same spot as KwaDukuza. They named it Stanger, after the then surveyor general of KwaZulu Natal. It was officially named Stanger until 2006 when its name reverted back to KwaDukuza in a nod to the Zulu heritage of the area.

Today Stanger (as it is still widely known), is a bustling town surrounded by sugarcane fields (sugar cane does well in the humid, subtropical climate) and is a melting pot of culture. There is a large Indian influence in the town as well as the Zulu heritage which is still visible. One can visit Shaka’s grave and the small museum alongside it, as well as the mahogany tree, under which he held meetings, which stands proudly in front of the municipal offices.
