Garden Route Verblyf - 14
The Garden Route gets its name from the area of South Africa in and along this exquisite region of the south coast of South Africa that spans the section between Mossel Bay in the Western Cape and the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The Garden Route encompasses the towns of Mossel Bay, George, Oudshoorn and Plettenberg Bay among many other smaller towns and interesting locations in between. This picturesque drive through the rich and varied countryside is the ideal setting for a slow and leisurely road trip, during which one can stop and see all the curiosities the coastline, the towns and the other places of interest have to offer. For those with an adventurous spirit a trip through the Garden Route shouldn’t exclude a bungee jump off either the Gourits River bridge or the Bloukrans River Bridge – the Bloukrans River jump being the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. Oudshoorn hosts the Cango Caves which is a vast underground network of Caverns through which tourists can take guided tours; Oudshoorn also offers a crocodile farm an ostrich farm and a snake farm where visitors can experience and learn about these animals up close.
George is the largest town in the area and plays an administrative role in the surrounding towns and is also the main commercial centre. The small coastal village of Knysna is surrounded by dense forests, a vast lagoon and the Knysna Heads looking over the ocean. The town and surrounding areas of Wilderness and Sedgefield offer an excellent place to enjoy the outdoors whether one enjoys sports and hiking or just relaxing and indulging in the ambiances. The entire Garden Route is steeped in history and culture, and almost every place one can stop has a story to go with it.
The many small towns along the Garden Route all have unique and interesting histories and features worth looking into. Many festivals and sporting events occur along this stretch throughout the year such as the Klein Karoo Arts Festival in Oudshoorn or Knysna’s annual Oyster Festival which is always a well-attended attraction which brings in large amounts of local and foreign visitors.
The Garden Route is well worth taking a slow and studied tour through. One is advised to allow of plenty of time to take advantage of all that the area and its communities has to offer.
